Thon Marathon

So I've decided to run a marathon. I actually decided a few weeks ago to do so. My motivation? Mostly to get in shape and to have a sport which I can continue to do throughout my adult life so I don't further descend into fat hell. Plus they tell me there are health benefits! I have been thinking about/researching which marathon I'd like to do and have decided to do a cool one in sunny SoCal to kick off the summer. The Rock and Roll Marathon in San Diego looks to be a fun run, with bands playing on the street corners and what not. It takes place on the 31st of May, 2009 so I have a little over 9 months to train. Thankfully I have a mother who is a fitness guru (she did an Iron(wo?)man a few years back.)
I've been running for a 20 minute loop Mon-Fri of the past two weeks, next week I'm kicking it up to 25 minutes. I'm giving myself a 2-month grace period of just running my ass off and keeping the cals down to shed some weight before I get in to actual serious training. I'm thinking I'll do my cross-training in the pool because hey, you might as well do what you know. I'm also in week two of the hundred pushup program, along with going to the gym a couple of times a week for some upper body training. I'm not going to get back on the weights in earnest, since I read muscle mass will eat up the energy you need for running. I'll chime in here weekly for status updates about my training.
One more thing. I am brewing a strong belgian beer (as soon as I get my yeast and oxygenation system) to commemorate this event. At ~9% ABV this will be a real celebration ale, and it will certainly be ambrosia with the amount of aging I put it through. I'll post my recipe up here when I figure it out.
